Gepanzerter Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7.5 cm Kanone Ausf D8,
Sturmgeschütz III Ausf D8,
SdKfz 1428:
Very similar to the Ausf A with some minor chassis variations.8 Was built on the PzKpfw III Ausf H chassis.8
New superstructure was main change. The gunner's direct vision sight was eliminated. The gunner's hatch was redesigned so that the gun sight could be raised beside it while the hatch remained closed. Some of the Ausf Ds were modified to be a commander's vehicle by adding a pannier to the right side of the superstructure.
3 Ausf Ds were sent to North Africa in the Sonderverband (Detachment for Special Employment 288) in early 1942.
