Italy's Savoia-Marchetti S.M.82 medium bomber added

The Savoia-Marchetti S.M.82 was used by the Regia Aeronautica and the Luftwaffe during World War II. I've now added a page for it, but unfortunately don't have a photo. If anyone has one send it my way, please!

Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 Pipistrello (bat) bomber updated

Another tri-motor bomber and transport that was used by Italy in World War II was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 Pipistrello. It helped Franco transport troops from North Africa during the Spanish Civil War which was key to his early successes.

Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 Sparviero (sparrowhawk) medium bomber updated

The main medium bomber used by the Italians was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 Sparviero. It started by being used in the Spanish Civil War and saw action on all fronts of World War II.

Italy's Reggiane Re. 2000, Re.2001, Re.2005 fighters updated

The Italians were also hamstrung by poor designs during World War II. The Reggiane Re.2000, Re.2001, and Re.2005 were designs, that did improve during the war, but they didn't improve as fast as their adversaries.
I've added some minor updates.

Italy's Piaggio P.108 heavy bomber added

Chalk it up to not knowing enough about Italian military aircraft, but I didn't realize that the Regia Aeronautica deployed a 4 engine heavy bomber. It did suffer heavy losses but the Piaggio P.108 was used primarily in the Mediterranean but also on the Eastern Front.

Probably Italy's best fighter to be produced during World War II, the Macchi C.205 Veltro was produced in small numbers.

Italy's Macchi MC.202 Folgore "Thunderbolt" fighter updated

The Macchi MC.202 Folgore was the first of the truely modern looking Italian fighter used in World War II. It had good success against Hurricanes and P-40s.

Italy's Fiat G.50 Freccia (Arrow) fighter updated

Giuseppe Gabrielli, designed the G.50 Freccia as his very first design for Fiat. Though it was a monoplane fighter, its performance was inadequate against enemy fighters.

Italy's Fiat CR.42 Falco (Falcon) Fighter updated

By the mid-1930s most countries were designing monoplane fighters. However, Italy, was still designing biplanes such as the CR.42 Falco fighter. I've made some additions to my page.

Italy's Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 medium bomber added

Another plane that was in Italy's outdated arsenal at the start of World War II was the three engined Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 medium bomber. They were used in Italy's attempts at creating an African empire and in the Spanish Civil War.

The early Italian fighters were also quite outclassed by Allied fighters. One such radial powered fighter was the Reggiane Re. 2000. Surprisingly it was exported to Hungary and Sweden.

Italy's Macchi MC.202 Folgore "Thunderbolt" fighter updated

The Italians eventually did use better designs and the Macchi C.202 was one of them. It used a license built Daimler-Benz engine that gave it excellent performance.

Italy's Macchi MC.200 Saetta "Lightning" fighter updated

Unfortunately for the pilots of the Italian air force in World War II, the aircraft that they took into battle were not of modern designs and often did poorly against the newer designs of the Allies. One such fighter was the Macchi C.200. It was already outclassed by older allied designs such as the Hurricane.

I've added the specifications for the Series 6 and additional historical information.

Italy's Cant Z.1007 Alcione (kingfisher) medium bomber

I've always been fascinated by the Italian three engined planes that they used during the war. For me, a total non-designer, I have to ask, why not just have 4 engines instead of 3? But then again, what do I know about aeronautics!

The main Italian bomber of World War II was the S.M.79 Sparviero. Even though propaganda primarily portrayed it as a very weak bomber, it was well armored and was respected by Allied pilots.

Early World War II designs by the Italians were most often than not, obsolete before they came into service. The Italian Macchi MC.200 Saetta "Lightning" fighter was no exception.
