The B-17 Flying Fortress was an amazing airplane. It could take an amazing amount of damage and still get the crew back to base.
I've added some photos, including one where in the distance (above the tail) you can see a Me 110 starting its pass.

The Americans were looking for a way to take the war to Japan and the idea to bomb Japan by B-25 medium bombers was eventually decided upon. The B-25s took off from the carrier USS Hornet and did very minor physical damage to Japan but ultimately it lead to the attack on Midway which was the turning point in the war in the Pacific.
I've now added a photo from that mission.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
Probably the most well known of the allied bombers, the B-17 Flying Fortress, was there from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the end in Europe and Japan.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
Consolidated also produced the PB4Y-2 Privateer maritime patrol bomber.
I've added some photos for it too.

I've often wondered what went through the minds of the men who were part of the crews on the big bombers? The initial boredom of the flight, alone with your thoughts, preparing your weapons, watching your squadron mates airplanes around you, probably wondering which of them won't return. The the adrenaline rush when enemy fighters are seen. Then the total helplessness one must have felt when the flak started as there was nothing you could do to the flak, after all you couldn't shoot at it if you were the crewman who manned defensive weapons. The feelings of relief when you were back at your home field. Then the waiting to see who didn't make it back.
My father, who was a Marine, has always said he respected the pilots of the planes that protected the skies above him when he was fighting in the Pacific. He knew that they'd fly their missions, and go back to a "comfortable" base where they could eat and sleep, while he remained in the front line. He knew they had a very difficult job.
I've added a bunch of photos for one of the United States' main bombers, the B-24 Liberator.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
Possibly the most expensive weapon system developed during World War II was the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. At $3 billion (1940s price), it may have surpassed the development of the atomic bomb (seems like I remember a figure of $1 billion for it).
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
The Germans fielded some very excellent aircraft at the beginning of the war, but couldn't keep up with the newer bomber designs that the Allies fielded. The Germans relied, primarily, on the Heinkel He 111 bomber throughout the war. The German military's mindset was aircraft that would support the army, not take large loads of bombs against the factories of the enemy.

Growing up in the 70s in Northern California I can remember the Forest Service using a B-17 and a B-24 to help fight forest fires. I was near enough to the fires that I could see their bomb bay doors open and drop the fire retardant seemingly right over my head. These just fueled my interest in World War II even more.
I've now added some additional information on the B-24 and added some pictures.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
I've added some BuNo Numbers for the B-25 Mitchell and listed some of the PBJ units they were used in by the Marine Corps in World War II.

I've added additional specification and historical information for the Soviet Tupolev TB-3 heavy bomber. It was a very advanced bomber for the early 1930s when it was first designed and produced.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
First of the big 4 engine bombers used by the Royal Air Force in World War II was the Short Stirling. It was unfortunately hampered by its small wing as it couldn't go to the higher altitudes that were needed.
I've added additional specifications for some of the different models of Stirling.

The Savoia-Marchetti S.M.82 was used by the Regia Aeronautica and the Luftwaffe during World War II. I've now added a page for it, but unfortunately don't have a photo. If anyone has one send it my way, please!
Labels: bomber, italy, transport, world war ii
Another tri-motor bomber and transport that was used by Italy in World War II was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 Pipistrello. It helped Franco transport troops from North Africa during the Spanish Civil War which was key to his early successes.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
The main medium bomber used by the Italians was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 Sparviero. It started by being used in the Spanish Civil War and saw action on all fronts of World War II.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii

Just when you were still thinking that all Polish military aircraft weren't up to modern (for the late 1930s) designs, along come the PZL P.37 Los medium bomber. Though it was produced in large number and didn't win any decisive battles it was very well regarded by foreign powers, and many were wanting to purchase the P.37 for their own military air forces.
Labels: bomber, poland, world war ii
Another Polish military aircraft that was outclassed by the German's Luftwaffe was the PZL P.23 Karas.
I've added additional specs and historical data.
Labels: bomber, poland, world war ii
The Polikarpov U-2 / Po-2 was used by the Soviets throughout World War II, which is unusual for a bi-plane. It was used all the way until the taking of Berlin.
I've now added some additional specifications and historical information for it.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
Chalk it up to not knowing enough about Italian military aircraft, but I didn't realize that the Regia Aeronautica deployed a 4 engine heavy bomber. It did suffer heavy losses but the Piaggio P.108 was used primarily in the Mediterranean but also on the Eastern Front.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
The Soviets had a history of producing heavy bombers in the 1920s and 1930s but there wasn't much development during the Great Patriotic War. One heavy bomber that was developed in very small numbers was the Petlyakov Pe-8. They could carry 8,818 lb / 5,000 kg of bombs for a distance of around 2,300 - 3,000 miles, which is very good for a heavy bomber.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
The Petlyakov Pe-2 was one of the most successful aircraft used by the Soviet Union in World War II. It was used as a bomber, ground attack, reconnaissance, and fighter bomber.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
I've added quite a bit of new specifications and production data for the North American B-25 Mitchell. It's probably one of the more well known and recognizable medium bombers used in World War II.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
The Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu was intended to be a heavy bomber for the Japanese Army. However, it had poor performance and had heavy losses once it was used in the south west Pacific. This resulted in it being withdrawn from front line duties.
Labels: bomber, japan, world war ii
Probably the most well known Japanese bomber of World War II was the Mitsubishi G4M "Betty". It was the most produced Japanese bomber of the war.
Labels: bomber, japan, world war ii

Labels: bomber, germany, world war ii
I've added a ton of new information for the Junkers Ju 88 series of German aircraft. So much that I've had to break apart the main page into several separate pages.
Labels: bomber, fighter, germany, night fighter, reconnaissance, world war ii
The Junkers Ju 86 was one of the first bombers used by the Luftwaffe. However, it didn't perform as well and was moved to secondary duties. The Ju 86 was later made into a very high altitude reconnaissance version with much success.
Labels: bomber, germany, reconnaissance, world war ii
Fortunately for the Allies, Germany never had a successful heavy bomber in their arsenal. The only one that received any amount of production was the flawed Heinkel He 177 Greif.
I've made some additions to my page.
Labels: bomber, germany, world war ii
I've updated my page for the He 111 with a lot of new information.
Labels: bomber, germany, world war ii

Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
I've added additional specifications and historical information for the PZL P-23.
Labels: bomber, poland, world war ii
I've now added much new information on the Dornier Do 217. I also had to add a separate page for the Do 217 night fighters.
Labels: bomber, germany, night fighter, world war ii
I've added more specifications and historical data for the Dornier Do 17. There was so much that I had to split out the Do 17 reconnaissance to have their own page.
Labels: bomber, germany, reconnaissance, world war ii
I've finished the updates/additions to the Mosquito pages.
Labels: bomber, fighter, night fighter, reconnaissance, united kingdom, world war ii

The United States used the Brewster SB2A Buccaneer as a trainer and target tower, even though it was originally designed to be a reconnaissance bomber.
I've added a new page for the Buccaneer.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
Another case of too little too late was the French Breguet Bre 690 series bombers. The Bre 690s were excellent planes, but the German attack in May 1940 interrupted development and production so that few Bre 690s were used.
I've updated my page for the Bre 690 series by added some new specifications and production figures.
Labels: bomber, france, world war ii

The French used the Bloch 210 to attack the German's communication line after the attack on France started.
I've now added a new page for it.
Labels: bomber, france, world war ii
The French rushed to catch up to the Germans, but they just didn't have enough time before Germany started World War II in Europe. One late arriving design was the Bloch MB 174 and Bloch MB 175. These performed rather well during the war and a variant was even produced after the war for the French Navy.
Labels: bomber, france, reconnaissance, world war ii
Despite some of the designs for bombers that the French had during the 1930s, the Bloch 131 actually looked more like a normal combat aircraft.
I've added a page for the Bloch 131.
Labels: bomber, france, world war ii
The best bomber used by the English was the Avro Lancaster. It flew over 156,000 mission and dropped over 600,000 tons of bombs on the enemy.
I've updated the specifications and production information on my web page.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
The United Kingdom's Avro Manchester might have been better if the engines would have performed better. But because of those failures the Manchester's successors would be the Halifax and Lancaster.
I've now added additional historical and specification information to my web page.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
The United Kingdom's Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was the first aircraft to bomb German soil since World War I and the first to fly over Berlin (a leaflet raid) in World War II.
I've added additional specification information for the Whitleys and more detailed production figures.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
The first jet bomber in history was the German Arado Ar 234 Blitz.
I've updated my web page for it.
Labels: bomber, germany, world war ii
Interesting dilemma. A source that I used first for a French bomber called it the Amiot, and the source I'm looking at now called it the Amoit 143. So I'm going to just leave both spellings for now until I can verify which spelling is correct. Wikipedia says Amiot.
Anyway I'm on to a new book and have updated the page for the Amiot/Amoit.
Labels: bomber, france, world war ii
The United Kingdom's Vickers Wellington bombers carried the war to the Germans in the early years of World War II.
I've added additional specifications and additional variant information for the Wellington.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
The Soviet Union's Tupolev Tu-2 attack bomber was still being developed when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941. It later was used at Stalingrad and Kursk to good affect.
I've added the specifications for the Tu-2 model and some variant information.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
The Soviet Union used the Tupolev SB-2 bomber starting in the Spanish Civil War and going through to the end of World War II.
I've now added a new page for the SB-2 and it's specifications and historical information, but unfortunately, I have no photos of it. Feel free to send me some if you have them!

The first of the large 4 engine bombers used by the Bomber Command of the Royal Air Force (RAF) as the Short Stirling.
I've updated some of the specifications, variants, and amount produced.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
Another plane that was in Italy's outdated arsenal at the start of World War II was the three engined Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 medium bomber. They were used in Italy's attempts at creating an African empire and in the Spanish Civil War.
I've now added a new page for the S.M.81 to my website.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
The Italian's main bomber was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M. 79. It was used throughout the Mediterranean theater.
I've updated the web page with additional specifications information.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
Unfortunately for Poland their equipment was outdated compared to much of the equipment in use by the invading Germans in World War II. One such bomber was the PZL P-23 Karas that also suffered heavy casualties in the invasion of Poland.
I've now added a new page for the P-23.
Labels: bomber, poland, world war ii
Some felt that the Soviet Union's Petlyakov Pe-2 bomber was inadequate but in combat it turned out to be an exceptional plane.
I've included some additional specifications and variant information. It always surprises me how the specs from one source can be quite different than the specs from another. I don't have access to original documents so it's what I have to rely on.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
The United States' North American B-25 Mitchell bomber was used on one of the most audacious attacks in the war, a group of them took off from an aircraft carrier and bombed the Japanese islands.
I've added specifications for the B-25J and additional information on the variants.
Labels: bomber, united states
The Japanese wanted a bomber to replace the Ki-21 "Sally" bombers, and the Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu was the design chosen. Though it wasn't a very advanced design it did try to protect the crew with armor and self sealing fuel tanks. Even with those, crews didn't care for the Ki-49 as they felt it was difficult to fly.
I've added a new page with specifications and photos of the Ki-49.
Labels: bomber, japan, world war ii
The Japanese designers did have armor for the crew and self sealing fuel tanks on at least one design, the Mitsubishi Ki-67.
I've added a new page for the Hirya.
Labels: bomber, japan, world war ii
The Japanese seemed to design planes that didn't take care of the crews very well. Typically little armor or self sealing fuel tanks. One such aircraft that was used during the entire war was the Mitsubishi G4M. Fortunately the military saw the necessity to protect the crews. Afterall it takes a short time to build a plane, much longer to train a crewmember.
I've updated the G4M pages:
Labels: bomber, japan, world war ii
The Japanese combat aircraft had much success against the inferior defenses and equipment of the Chinese in the early years that lead up to World War II. Unfortunately for the Japanese crews this lead to the attitude that these early designs would be adequate for the upcoming war with the United States and Britain. The Mitsubishi Ki-21 was such a combat plane. It was kept in combat much longer than it should have been.
I've added a new page for the Ki-21.

The Martin B-26 Marauder had a bad reputation of crashing, but it turned out that this reputation wasn't deserved.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
The Martin 187 Baltimore was used by the Royal Air Force and South Africa Air Force in the Mediterranean.
