The Vickers Wellesley bomber was used quite a bit in the Middle East and North Africa during the first couple years of World War II.
I've added a new page for it.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
In the years leading up to World War II the British started their rearmament programs later than some countries. As a result some of the out dated aircraft of the early 1930s were still being used by the military. One such aircraft was the Vickers Vildebeest and the Vickers Vincent.
I've now added a page for them.

The Tupolev Tu-2 was a very good attack bomber but it's development cycle and lack of production saw it not being used as extensively.
I've now made some additions to the variants developed and some new specification data.
Labels: attack bomber, soviet union, world war ii
I've updated my page for the Tupolev SB-2. Still don't have a photo so if anyone has some please send them my way.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
I've added additional specification and historical information for the Soviet Tupolev TB-3 heavy bomber. It was a very advanced bomber for the early 1930s when it was first designed and produced.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
I've added a new page for the Tachikawa Ki-36 and Ki-55.
Labels: cooperation, japan, trainer, world war ii
I've added a ton of new specification, production, and historical information for many of the Supermarine Spitfire models. There are now individual pages for the main variants.

The United Kingdom's Supermarine Walrus "Shagbag" was used extensively to rescue downed pilots. Approximately 7,500 were rescued by these biplanes.

First of the big 4 engine bombers used by the Royal Air Force in World War II was the Short Stirling. It was unfortunately hampered by its small wing as it couldn't go to the higher altitudes that were needed.
I've added additional specifications for some of the different models of Stirling.
Labels: bomber, united kingdom, world war ii
The United Kingdom's Short Sunderland flying boat was nicknamed the "Flying Porcupine" for it's tough defensive armament.
I've added additional specification and production information to its page.

The Savoia-Marchetti S.M.82 was used by the Regia Aeronautica and the Luftwaffe during World War II. I've now added a page for it, but unfortunately don't have a photo. If anyone has one send it my way, please!
Labels: bomber, italy, transport, world war ii
Another tri-motor bomber and transport that was used by Italy in World War II was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.81 Pipistrello. It helped Franco transport troops from North Africa during the Spanish Civil War which was key to his early successes.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
The main medium bomber used by the Italians was the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 Sparviero. It started by being used in the Spanish Civil War and saw action on all fronts of World War II.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
The Swedes also produced a two engine light / dive bomber, the Saab-18.
Labels: bomber, sweden, world war ii
Even though Sweden was neutral during World War II it did produce military aircraft. One of these was the Saab 17 dive bomber.
Labels: dive bomber, sweden, world war ii
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the top fighters and fighter bombers used by the United States in World War II. It started out being used on long range escort missions and eventually was used in the fighter bomber role.
I've added quite a bit of specification information and put the different models on their own pages.
Labels: fighter, united states, world war ii
The Republic P-43 wasn't a great fighter, but it did lead to the development of the exceptional P-47 Thunderbolt. After initial use as a fighter the P-43s were converted into photo reconnaissance aircraft.

Just when you were still thinking that all Polish military aircraft weren't up to modern (for the late 1930s) designs, along come the PZL P.37 Los medium bomber. Though it was produced in large number and didn't win any decisive battles it was very well regarded by foreign powers, and many were wanting to purchase the P.37 for their own military air forces.
Labels: bomber, poland, world war ii
Another Polish military aircraft that was outclassed by the German's Luftwaffe was the PZL P.23 Karas.
I've added additional specs and historical data.
Labels: bomber, poland, world war ii
The Polish Air Force had some highly motivated fighter pilots but unfortunately for them they had outdated planes. The PZL P.11 was the main fighter they used to fight against the Germans. In the short time they fought in the air, they shot down 125 Luftwaffe planes for a loss of 114 of their own.
I've added additional specification and production information for the P.11.

For the French it was a case of "a little to late" for many of their aircraft designs. If they hadn't waited to rearm until they were well behind the Germans they might have had some exceptional fighting aircraft. Unfortunately one of those subpar designs was the Potez 63 which sustained heavy losses when the Germans invaded in May 1940.

One of the few monoplane aircraft that Nikolai Polikarpov designed the Polikarpov I-16 Rata did make up 2/3 of the Soviet fighter force when Germany invaded. Even with the success of the I-16, Polikarpov still designed biplane aircraft.
Labels: fighter, soviet union, world war ii
Unfortunately for Nikolai Polikarpov he couldn't keep up with the modern ideas of the late 1930s and kept designing bi-planes (his design bureau was later purged). One of these was the Polikarpov I-153 fighter that was used in the early years of World War II. It suffered heavily during the German invasion.
I've added quite a bit of new information to my previously sparse information.
Labels: fighter, soviet union, world war ii
The Polikarpov U-2 / Po-2 was used by the Soviets throughout World War II, which is unusual for a bi-plane. It was used all the way until the taking of Berlin.
I've now added some additional specifications and historical information for it.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
Chalk it up to not knowing enough about Italian military aircraft, but I didn't realize that the Regia Aeronautica deployed a 4 engine heavy bomber. It did suffer heavy losses but the Piaggio P.108 was used primarily in the Mediterranean but also on the Eastern Front.
Labels: bomber, italy, world war ii
The Soviets had a history of producing heavy bombers in the 1920s and 1930s but there wasn't much development during the Great Patriotic War. One heavy bomber that was developed in very small numbers was the Petlyakov Pe-8. They could carry 8,818 lb / 5,000 kg of bombs for a distance of around 2,300 - 3,000 miles, which is very good for a heavy bomber.
Labels: bomber, soviet union, world war ii
The Petlyakov Pe-2 was one of the most successful aircraft used by the Soviet Union in World War II. It was used as a bomber, ground attack, reconnaissance, and fighter bomber.

One of the coolest looking planes from the World War II area is an all black Northrop P-61 Black Widow night fighter. Just looking at it makes a shiver run down your spine knowing it meant business.
I've made some additional specification and historical updates.
Labels: night fighter, united states, world war ii
I've added quite a bit of new specicifications and historical information for the North American P-51 Mustang which was the most famous fighter in World War II.
Labels: fighter, united states, world war ii
I've added quite a bit of new specifications and production data for the North American B-25 Mitchell. It's probably one of the more well known and recognizable medium bombers used in World War II.
Labels: bomber, united states, world war ii
I've added what the insignia is for the different ranks in the US Army.
Labels: united states, world war ii
The most produced and used trainer that the United States produced was the North American AT-6. It was used by over 40 countries all the way into the 1990s.

The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate was probably the best fighter produced by Japan during World War II. Unfortunately it was plagued by poor workmanship and a finicky engine.
Labels: fighter, japan, world war ii
The Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu was intended to be a heavy bomber for the Japanese Army. However, it had poor performance and had heavy losses once it was used in the south west Pacific. This resulted in it being withdrawn from front line duties.
Labels: bomber, japan, world war ii
The Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki was a very good fighter. Initially Japanese pilots did not like it as it wasn't as maneuverable as previous fighter designs but they soon began to like it more.
Labels: fighter, japan, world war ii
The Japanese Army didn't want to use the A6M Zeke, so the Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa was produced. It was successful in the early months of the was as its opponents typically used inferior planes. Even though they were outclassed they were the most produced fighter of the Japanese Army.
Labels: fighter, japan, world war ii
Originally designed as an escort fighter for the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Nakajima J1N was later used as a night fighter with some effect in the southwest Pacific against B-24s. When later deployed in the home islands to fight the B-29s they were not fast enough to catch them.

The Nakajima C6N Saiun was an advanced design that was made specifically to be a carrier based reconnaissance aircraft. It had exceptionally long range (3,300 miles / 5,310 km) and high speed (379 mph / 610 kph). It could stalk the US Fleet with near impunity.

All the menus are updated! I'm just cleaning up some files this morning and should be back to adding new content later today!

The menu for the United States is now updated.
Labels: web site maintenance
Now I've gotten the United Kingdom's menus finished. Only 2 more big countries to go, the United States, and the Soviet Union.
Labels: web site maintenance
I'm now done through Germany. It was the largest to do. I'll still be working on updating the pages as soon as I can. Most pages will save around 50K in download size because of the streamlined menus. Thanks for your patience.
Labels: web site maintenance
Starting to get the menu updates applied to some of the pages. This will be a labor intensive process as I have to "touch" each page in the site and build appropriate menus. But it should be worth it as the page sizes should be a little smaller as the menus will be much leaner. Here's a sample page, Admiral Toys 72001. As always, comments are welcome.
Labels: web site maintenance
I've got some new menuing software and am going to be working on improving the menus and how they work. Don't know how long it'll take but look for improvements in the near future!

The Nakajima B6N Tenzan was to be a replacement for the B5N. It had a much stronger engine which initially caused it much difficulty.
Labels: japan, torpedo bomber, world war ii
The Nakajima B5N was instrumental in Japan's early successes. I've updated my page with additional historical and specification information.
Labels: japan, torpedo bomber, world war ii
The Nakajima Ki-27 was used successfully in the years before World War II in China and against Russia, but was quickly relegated to secondary roles after the first few months of the Japanese campaigns in the Pacific.
Labels: fighter, japan, world war ii
I've added additional specification information for the Morane-Saulnier MS 406.
